Following the signing of a Memorandum of Intent between Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) and the Asian Gemmological Institute and Laboratory (AGIL) in July to jointly promote the gemstone industry through education, training, testing, certification, research and industry development, HKMU recently held the “International Gemmological Conference 2024 and Launch Ceremony of Applied Degree Programme in Gemmology and Jewellery Studies”. The conference marked the introduction of Hong Kong's first applied degree programme in gemmology and jewellery studies, with the goal of nurturing more talent in testing, certification, research and industry development for the gemstone and jewellery industry of Hong Kong.
HKMU has been dynamically responding to market trends and staying in tune with the latest developments across various industries by tailoring its professional programmes and emphasising both theory and practical applications. As a global jewellery trade centre, Hong Kong has experienced growing demand from emerging markets in recent years, presenting a revival opportunity for the jewellery industry. Supported by the AGIL and industry partners, HKMU has launched Hong Kong's first applied degree programme in gemmology and jewellery studies, available in a distance-learning module, to meet the demand for nurturing talent for the gemmology industry.
The Launch Ceremony took place during the “International Gemmological Conference 2024” on 19 September and was officiated by Under Secretary for Education Jeff Sze Chun-fai, AGIL Founder and Principal Dr Dominic Mok Wai-kei, HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing, School of Science and Technology Dean Prof. Philips Wang Fu-lee, and School of Science and Technology Head of Construction and Quality Management Dr Tony Lee Chi-chung. The conference was attended by more than 250 industry representatives, including Executive Council Member Dr the Honourable Eliza Chan Ching-har, HKMU Foundation Advisory Committee Chairman Dr Peter Lee Kwok-wah and Advisory Committee Member David Chau Shing-yim.
School of Science and Technology Head of Construction and Quality Management Dr Tony Lee Chi-chung expresses his gratitude to the industry partners for their full support on the Applied Degree Programme in Gemmology and Jewellery studies.
